Put an "Amen" to It

Amen: Be it so, or so be it.

This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. -Psalm 118:24

The number of our days is written in God's book. Before He formed us in the womb, He knew us.

God alone knows what the new year holds for each of us. We can only look back to see what He has done.

During fellowship a few Sundays ago, a friend remarked that 2012 had been "a tough year." I agreed. But later I wondered, why is it that we tend to more easily recall the bad times over the good times?

Ingratitude.

I can only see into my own heart. Verse-upon-verse in Scripture speaks of God's goodness and mercy. Again and again I read that nothing has occurred that He did not ordain.

But I would receive only the good from His hand. I would complain about the trials though I am commanded to be grateful to share in Christ's sufferings and the growth that results.

2012?

A time of financial leanness, sure. But a time to depend more upon God's providence. A time of rejoicing as marriage bonds are deepened and made stronger and the kingdom purpose affirmed, if not unveiled.

Sunshine, lolipops and rainbows? Not hardly. As Wayne Watson notes in his song, "A Beautiful Place," is sometimes reached over "a rough and rocky road." He goes on to sing of the blessing of watching God's hand "put color to our black and white dreams."

2012 was a great year, come to think of it. I'm looking forward to 2013.

Prayer: Gracious God, help me to rejoice and be glad in these days you have made.

Amen.
